I am a first year student of medical faculty. My both sisters are in the USA, but not citizens of the USA. My mother and father are in India. I am planning to settle in the US as a doctor. Will I have to do internship before taking the USMLE [US Medical License Exam]? I have already with me a ten-year visitor visa. I have visited the US twice. After passing Steps 1 and 2 of USMLE, can I take Step 3 exam on visitor visa, or will I have to get a new type of visa? Also, I want your suggestion about my marriage. Should I marry an American citizen or Indian citizen? which would be better?

Steps for USMLE, Jetpur, Gujarat, India

Dear Steps for USMLE:

You have to complete your MBBS for the USMLE. As you already know, the USMLE is required for foreign physicians who wish to practice in the US. Upon successfully completing the USMLE, you would have to undertake a 3-4 year long residency.

The USMLE is a 3-step process. You can complete Steps 1 and 2 of USMLE in India, while you must complete Step 3 in the US. You can be in the US on a visitor visa for Step 3. We have addressed this issue in more detail in an earlier column: How do I do medical residency in the US?

As far as your marriage is concerned, we can not properly advise you on this issue. We hope that you intend to get married to the person, and not to his or her citizenship or immigration status. Once in the US, you would be able to handle your immigration/citizenship status on your own.
