I am studying in the final year of Mechanical Engineering. I wish to do MS in the US. Please advise on the following: 1) which universities offer MS degrees in the US, 2) what score on GRE can assure admission, 3) which subjects are best to pursue in MS, and 4) how much tuition fee one has to pay and how one gets financial help. Kindly guide me.

Dear Tell Me All:

With your background, you can pursue an MS in Engineering or an MBA in the US. However, good MBA schools expect candidates to have 3-5 years of work experience. You can find the List of Engineering Schools as well as the List of Business Schools on iMahal.

Typically, you would be expected to take the GRE for admission into an MS in Engineering. GRE scores are considered seriously, among other admission criteria. To ask what GRE score can assure admission is not the right question. Obviously, it depends on the quality and reputation of the college. Plus, GRE is just one part of the admission criteria. You should try to do your very best on the GRE. You can use the iMahal College Finder for the US to see how GRE scores match up with historic expectations of colleges.

The best subject area or discipline for the MS degree depends on what the definition of "best" is. What is the end game? What are your long-term goals? What do you want to be when you grow up? What are your interests and passion? And so on. Education is a means to an end, not an end unto itself. Without knowing what you mean by "best," we can not answer this question.

International students in the US for Master's programs can obtain financial aid from their college. Obtaining financial is extremely competitive. During the application process, you can indicate your need for financial aid. Admission into a college is much easier to obtain than is financial aid. Cost of education in the US is extremely high - it ranges from US$ 15,000 to US$ 45,000 per year, depending on the quality and location of the institution. Looking at the tuition alone as the cost is rather misleading.
