Grammar Congo

Suggest improvements for the highlighted problem area:

Panga and me took some tourists on a singing tour of the Congo. I steered the boat while Panga strummed on his guitar and watched for crocodiles. At Malebo Pool our tourists reacted with frightened grimaces to me singing.

They asked Panga and I to humor them with a non-musical tour. We obliged them until we came upon some rough rapids. Here, several of the tourists were surprised when they heard my singing a solo. But they were too worried by the approaching cataracts to complain.

Answer:

- Pronoun Case -

Correct writing with pronouns demands careful attention to case. When a pronoun serves as a subject in a clause, it takes the nominative case. Our opening paragraph shows a pronoun in need of a correction:

Panga and me took some tourists on a singing tour of the Congo.

The personal pronoun I has the forms I, me, mine for the nominative, objective, and possessive cases, respectfully. Because the pronoun is part of the subject, the nominative case is called for:

Panga and I took some tourists on a singing tour of the Congo.

Learning these three cases for certain pronouns is our first step. Although it is a bit unorthodox, we recommend the following memory aid:

  nominative objective possessive
  (subject) (object) (indicator of ownership)
I asked me for my advice.
You asked you for your advice.
He asked him for his advice.
She asked her for her advice.
It asked it for its advice.
We asked us for our advice.
They asked them for their advice.
Who asked whom for whose advice?
