The US Congress is considering allowing China into the WTO. While many Republicans support this, many Democrats do not. The labor unions oppose China's entry due to the fear that cheap labor in China would displace US workers. Th religious right, a staunch Republican block, opposes China's entry into the WTO on the grounds of religious persecution in China. All the while, the Clinton administration has been proposing constructive engagement with China and a decoupling of the trade issue from human rights issues.
